National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. NOAA was established in 1970 within the U.S. Department of Commerce. It is focused on the conditions of the oceans and the atmosphere. NOAA has two main components: the National Weather Service (NWS), and the Na¬tional Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS).
