Its ice reaches a thickness of up to 900 meters, forming a frozen river that winds its way through the rugged mountain landscape.<\/p>\n<p>The effects of <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: climate change\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;climate change&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns due to natural or man-made effects.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/de\/glossary\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">climate change<\/a> are taking a toll on the Aletsch Glacier. Over the past century, it has been retreating at an increasing rate of about 100 meters per year. Rising global temperatures are causing the glacier to lose more ice through melting than it gains through snowfall. This imbalance threatens not only the glacier&#x2019;s size but also the ecosystems that depend on it.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: satellite\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;satellite&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A free-flying object orbiting the Earth, another planet, or the sun.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/de\/glossary\/satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Satellite<\/a> imagery has been instrumental in monitoring the Aletsch Glacier&#x2019;s changes. These images provide a clear visual record of the glacier&#x2019;s retreat and allow scientists to quantify its decline.
