They rather acquire series of greyscale images in different parts of the <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: electromagnetic spectrum\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;electromagnetic spectrum&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The entire range of radiant energies or wave frequencies from the longest to the shortest wavelengths. The spectrum usually is divided into seven sections: radio, microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, x-ray, and gamma-ray radiation.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/de\/glossary\/electromagnetic-spectrum\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">electromagnetic spectrum<\/a>. These <strong>image bands<\/strong> are used for scientific evaluations, and, similar to the procedures applied in printing and display technology, they are combined to produce colour images of various types for a wealth of different visualisation purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Different from usual photography, the greyscale image bands are combined in various ways. Depending on the application, images are produced in natural colours (true-colour image), false-colour infrared images and other <a class=\"glossaryLink\"  title=\"Glossary: band\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;band&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A region of the electromagnetic spectrum to which a remote sensor responds; a multispectral sensor makes measurements in a number of spectral bands.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/de\/glossary\/band\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>band<\/a> combinations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: true colours\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;true colours&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Visualisation of satellite data in realistic (natural) colours, requires a combination of three or more image bands.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/de\/glossary\/true-colours\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">True colours<\/a> and False-colour infrared Images<\/strong><br>\nWhile true colour images are used to show the Earth &#x201C;as it is&#x201D; (i.e. as it would appear to the human eye) for mapping and illustration purposes, other representations are used to highlight specific properties of the displayed area.<\/p>\n<p>Important additional information is contained especially in the infrared image bands. This information is used e.g. to highlight and to analyse properties of plants, because the <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: chlorophyll\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;chlorophyll&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Molecule in green plants giving them their colour. It allows plants to absorb energy from the sun as they undergo the process of photosynthesis.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/de\/glossary\/chlorophyll\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">chlorophyll<\/a> contained in the leaves reflects the infrared part of the sunlight very well.
