Triggered by a combination of factors, including heavy rainfall and snowmelt, the flooding inundated homes, farms, and infrastructure along the Missouri River.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: climate change\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;climate change&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns due to natural or man-made effects.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/de\/glossary\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Climate change<\/a> played a role in this event, as rising global temperatures are leading to more extreme weather patterns, with heavier <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: precipitation\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitation&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Water falling from the atmosphere to the ground in liquid (rain) or solid (snow, hail) form.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/de\/glossary\/precipitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">precipitation<\/a> and increased risk of flooding. In the case of Plattsmouth, the area experienced record-breaking rainfall, with some areas receiving over 50 cm of rain in a single month. This excessive rainfall, combined with the saturated ground from earlier precipitation, overwhelmed the river&#x2019;s capacity to contain water.<\/p>\n<p>The flooding affected over 2,000 homes and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people in the Plattsmouth area.
