{"id":2210,"date":"2025-02-05T13:25:17","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T12:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/?page_id=2210"},"modified":"2025-03-03T13:55:50","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T12:55:50","slug":"boehlen","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/anthroposphere\/boehlen\/","title":{"rendered":"Boehlen"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>From Lignite to Solar Power<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/wp-content\/gismaps_maps\/ant11_3_boehlen-solarpark\/index.html\" width=\"100%\" height=\"650\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>lignite mines<\/strong> near B&#xF6;hlen, located near Leipzig, Germany, were part of the Central German lignite mining district, a major source of energy for the region throughout the 20th century. The mines began operations in the 1920s, extracting lignite (brown coal), which was used primarily for power generation and industrial purposes. At its peak, the open-cast mines covered a vast area and significantly altered the landscape, with deep pits and displaced earth creating an industrial wasteland.<\/p>\n<p>By the 1990s, environmental concerns and a shift away from coal as a primary energy source led to the mine&#x2019;s closure. In 1999, mining operations in the Zwenkau mine ceased, leaving behind a heavily scarred and barren landscape. However, in the years following the mine&#x2019;s abandonment, <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: extensive\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;extensive&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Farming: Agricultural production system that uses small inputs of labour, fertilizers, and capital, and producing small output relative to the land area being farmed.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/extensive\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">extensive<\/a> efforts were made to rehabilitate the area.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most significant transformations involved flooding the former mine pits to create lakes such as the Hainer See and the Kahnsdorfer See, a process that began in the early 2000s. The lakes now cover a significant part of the surface. They have become a popular destination for recreation, offering activities such as sailing, fishing, and swimming.<\/p>\n<p>A part of the surrounding land has also been converted to produce renewable energies. One example is the <strong>solar power plant<\/strong> &#x201C;Energiepark Witznitz&#x201D;, which covers about 5 km&#xB2; of former lignite mine areas.
