This is primarily due to the diversion of water from the two main rivers that feed it, the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya, for agricultural irrigation purposes. The Soviet Union initiated large-scale irrigation projects to cultivate cotton and other crops in the <a class=\"glossaryLink\"  title=\"Glossary: arid\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;arid&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Dry. A climate sub-type in which there is a severe excess of evaporation over precipitation.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/arid\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>arid<\/a> region, diverting water away from the Aral Sea.<\/p>\n<p>The shrinking of the Aral Sea has led to environmental and social consequences. As the water level dropped, the <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: salinity\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;salinity&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Salt concentration of (ocean) water or soil.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/salinity\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">salinity<\/a> of the lake increased. Fish populations declined drastically, leading to the collapse of the fishing industry in the region. Salty dust from the dry lakebed became airborne, leading to an increase in respiratory health problems and in the incidence of other diseases. The collapse of the fishing industry and the <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: degradation\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;degradation&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Decline of the value of a biophysical environment due to human-induced processes.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/degradation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">degradation<\/a> of agricultural land have economic consequences for the people living around the Aral Sea. How old is this data? What does this tell us about the applicability of satellite data to produce long-term time series?<\/li>\n<li>Look at the <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: false colour\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;false colour&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A colour imaging process which produces an image of a colour that does not correspond to the true or natural colour of the scene (as seen by our eyes). In Earth observation often used e.g. with infrared data (False colour Infrared, FIR).&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/false-colour\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">false colour<\/a> infrared image from 2023. In which colour does vegetation appear? What can you say about the distribution of vegetation? Focus on rivers and canals. Is this vegetation natural or cultivated?<\/li>\n<li>Look at the images below, which show the development of the water surface of the Aral Sea (left) and the water level (right). The northern part of the Lake has been stabilised by a dam.
