{"id":3969,"date":"2026-09-08T16:50:41","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T14:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/?page_id=3969"},"modified":"2026-09-08T16:50:41","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T14:50:41","slug":"gigafactory","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/anthroposphere\/gigafactory\/","title":{"rendered":"Gigafactory"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Gigafactory near Germany&#x2019;s capital<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/wp-content\/gismaps_maps\/ant19_3_gigafactory\/index.html\" width=\"100%\" height=\"670\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">&#xFEFF;<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Located near Gr&#xFC;nheide, about 35 km southeast of Berlin, Tesla&#x2019;s Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg is one of the largest industrial projects built in eastern Germany since reunification in 1990. First announced in November 2019, the construction began soon afterwards. The first Model Y vehicles were produced in March 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The factory occupies about 300 hectares, an area roughly equivalent to 420 football pitches. The first stage involved investment of several billion euros. By 2026, almost 12,000 people were employed at the site, and Tesla announced plans for another 2,500&#x2013;3,500 jobs. The factory produces about one hundred thousand electric vehicles and millions of battery cells per year. According to Tesla it is its first European site where both batteries and electric vehicles are produced.<\/p>\n<p>Planning documents describe the original surroundings as being dominated by forest with scattered settlements, while the factory transformed a large part of this landscape into an industrial area. This development can be seen in <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: satellite\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;satellite&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A free-flying object orbiting the Earth, another planet, or the sun.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">satellite<\/a> data showing the expansion of buildings, roads, cleared forests and new infrastructure over time.<\/p>\n<p>The factory has brought environmental benefits as well as environmental concerns. The production of electric vehicles supports the transition away from petrol and diesel cars, reducing greenhouse-gas emissions especially when the vehicles are charged with low-carbon electricity.<\/p>\n<p>However, building such a large factory also changes the local environment. About 300 hectares of land were developed, including forest. The location has raised concerns about water use and groundwater protection, because parts of the factory area are within a water-protection region.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has attempted to reduce some of these impacts. According to recent figures, the factory&#x2019;s <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: freshwater\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;freshwater&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Liquid or frozen water containing low concentrations of salts and other dissolved solids.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/freshwater\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">freshwater<\/a> consumption fell from about 457,000 m&#xB3; in 2024 to 305,000 m&#xB3; in 2025, with production wastewater being recycled on site. Solar-power capacity at the factory also increased to about 15.9 MW in 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Economically, the Gigafactory has transformed Gr&#xFC;nheide and the wider region. Thousands of direct jobs have been created, with additional employment in transport, construction, housing, services and companies supplying the factory.<\/p>\n<p>&#xA0;<\/p>\n<h3>Exercises<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Satellite Map:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Look at the satellite image, which at launch shows the <strong>true color <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: Sentinel\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Sentinel&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Series of six different Earth Observation satellite types under responsibility of ESA in the Copernicus programme.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/sentinel\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Sentinel<\/a>-2 image from July 2019<\/strong>, in a situation before the construction of the Gigafactory was started.<\/li>\n<li>Look at the <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: satellite image map\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;satellite image map&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Map created based on satellite image data.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/satellite-image-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">satellite image map<\/a> and describe the situation. Try to identify different landcover types (forest, water, fields, built-up areas).<\/li>\n<li>Use the <strong>layer selector<\/strong> and add the <strong>Sentinel-2 true color<\/strong> images from <strong>2020<\/strong>, <strong>2022<\/strong>, and <strong>2026 <\/strong>one by one. Try to identify the site of the Gigafactory. Describe the changes.<\/li>\n<li>Use the <strong>measure tool<\/strong> to determine the areas of the construction site as the factory grows.<\/li>\n<li>Use the <strong>layer selector<\/strong> to open the <strong>Sentinel-1 radar images<\/strong> and compare with the Sentinel-2 images in true colors. Which of the landcover elements identified above are visible in the radar image better, which worse?<\/li>\n<li>Open the Sentinel-2 true color and false color infrared image maps and have a closer look at the forests around the Gigafactory. What patterns can you detect? Try to find arguments why this is not a natural but a cultivated forest.<\/li>\n<li>Try to find arguments why the Gigafactory was built in that place.
