In this process, solar power has become an increasingly important part of China&#x2019;s energy mix as the country seeks to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and tackle air pollution. The country has set ambitious targets to increase the use of renewable energy, including a target to have 20% of its total energy consumption come from renewable sources by 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/china_solar_development.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1134\" src=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/china_solar_development.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/china_solar_development.jpg 480w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/china_solar_development-250x150.jpg 250w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/china_solar_development-400x240.jpg 400w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/china_solar_development-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\"\/><\/a><em>Diagram: Development of installed photovoltaic capacity, China and World.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the most impressive examples of China&#x2019;s progress in this field is the Tengger Desert Solar Park. Its construction began in 2015 and was completed in 2020. This solar park is located in the Tengger Desert in the northwest Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, only a few kilometers north of the Huang He (Yellow River), one of China&#x2019;s biggest rivers. Covering an area of 43 km&#xB2;, the power plant has a total peak capacity of more than 1500 megawatts (MW). This made it the sixth-largest solar facility in the world by the end of 2021.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/tengger_solar.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1135\" src=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/tengger_solar-610x458.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/tengger_solar-610x458.jpg 610w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/tengger_solar-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/tengger_solar-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/tengger_solar-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/tengger_solar.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><\/a>In addition to producing renewable energy, the Tengger Desert Solar Park helps to combat desertification in the area. The park&rsquo;s solar panels provide shade to the desert floor, which helps to reduce evaporation and keep the <a class=\"glossaryLink\"  title=\"Glossary: soil\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;soil&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Biologically active, porous medium that covers the uppermost layer of Earth&lsquo;s crust.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/soil\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>soil<\/a> moist.
