These fires were exacerbated by a drought and high temperatures, which created ideal conditions for fires to spread rapidly. The fires destroyed buildings and natural habitats, and caused widespread air pollution, with many residents forced to evacuate their homes for weeks at a time. The bushfires in 2019 and 2020 burned through an estimated 5.5 million hectares of land, destroyed over 2,400 homes, and caused the loss of an estimated 1.25 billion animals.<\/p>\n<p>Following the bushfires, the region experienced a <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: period\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;period&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Time required for a satellite to make one complete orbit.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/period\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">period<\/a> of heavy rainfall that led to severe flooding. The flooding caused <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: extensive\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;extensive&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Farming: Agricultural production system that uses small inputs of labour, fertilizers, and capital, and producing small output relative to the land area being farmed.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/extensive\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">extensive<\/a> damage to homes and infrastructure, including roads and bridges. It also caused significant environmental damage, with many areas of land and waterways affected by debris and sediment.<\/p>\n<p>With respect to economic impact, the Insurance Council of Australia estimated that insured losses from the bushfires in the state of New South Wales alone exceeded Euro 1.5 billion. The cost of the floods that followed in 2021 was estimated to be around Euro 150 million, with over 3,000 people evacuated and many homes and businesses damaged or destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>The environmental impact of these events has also been significant. A large amount of habitat and wildlife was destroyed or severely impacted by the bushfires and floods. In particular, the endangered koala population in the area was significantly affected by the fires, with an estimated 30% of their habitat lost. The floods also affected water quality, with debris and sediment washed into the river system, affecting local ecosystems and <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: aquatic\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;aquatic&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;related to water.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/aquatic\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">aquatic<\/a> life.<br>\n&#xA0;<\/p>\n<h3>Exercises<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Satellite Map:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Select the <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: false colour\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;false colour&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A colour imaging process which produces an image of a colour that does not correspond to the true or natural colour of the scene (as seen by our eyes).
