The port handles more than 43 million TEUs (standard containers, Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) annually, making it one of the world&#x2019;s busiest ports. The Donghai Bridge connects Yangshan Island to the mainland, stretching over 32.5 kilometres and standing as one of the longest sea bridges globally.<\/p>\n<p>Situated adjacent to Yangshan Port, the Donghai Bridge Wind Farm was China&#x2019;s first commercial wind farm. It boasts more than 60 wind turbines with a combined capacity of over 200 megawatts (MW).<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: satellite\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;satellite&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A free-flying object orbiting the Earth, another planet, or the sun.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">satellite<\/a> maps show the changes due to the construction work of the port, the bridge, and the wind farm. The false-colour infrared representation highlights the vegetation in red.<br>\n&#xA0;<\/p>\n<h3>Exercises<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Satellite Map:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the layer selector icon in the upper right and deselect all layer groups (<strong>True colour<\/strong>, <strong><a class=\"glossaryLink\"  title=\"Glossary: IR\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;IR&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Infrared radiation, electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths from about 0.7 to 1000 &mu;m (between visible and microwave radiation), subdivided into visible and near-infrared, mid-infrared and far infrared.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/ir\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>IR<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong>Radar<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>Start to compare the True colour images from <strong>2000<\/strong>, <strong>2010<\/strong>, and <strong>2022,<\/strong>&#xA0;and describe the development of the displayed area.<\/li>\n<li>Deselect the layer group &#xAB;<strong>True colour<\/strong>&#xBB; and select the group &#xAB;<strong>IR<\/strong>&#xBB; with the false-colour infrared images.<\/li>\n<li>Looking at the false-colour infrared satellite images, try to identify different <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: land cover\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;land cover&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The characteristics of a land surface as determined by its spectral signature (the unique way in which a given type of land cover reflects and absorbs light).&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/land-cover\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">land cover<\/a> classes (vegetation, water, built-up areas).<\/li>\n<li>Deselect the layer group &#xAB;<strong>IR<\/strong>&#xBB; and select the group &#xAB;<strong>Radar<\/strong>&#xBB; with the radar satellite images taken by <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: Sentinel\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Sentinel&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Series of six different Earth Observation satellite types under responsibility of ESA in the Copernicus programme.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/sentinel\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Sentinel<\/a>-1.<\/li>\n<li>Looking at the radar satellite images, what can be seen strikingly clearly? Think about man-made structures in the sea.<\/li>\n<li>Try to estimate the total area of the container port.<\/li>\n<li>Is the water surface always of the same colour? Why not? Think about the shallow waters along the coastline around Shanghai and about the sediments brought in by the large rivers such as the Yangtse.<\/li>\n<li>Have a look at the structures in the water colour and think about the reasons.
