Triggered by a combination of factors, including heavy rainfall and snowmelt, the flooding inundated homes, farms, and infrastructure along the Missouri River.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: climate change\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;climate change&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns due to natural or man-made effects.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Climate change<\/a> played a role in this event, as rising global temperatures are leading to more extreme weather patterns, with heavier <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: precipitation\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;precipitation&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Water falling from the atmosphere to the ground in liquid (rain) or solid (snow, hail) form.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/precipitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">precipitation<\/a> and increased risk of flooding. In the case of Plattsmouth, the area experienced record-breaking rainfall, with some areas receiving over 50 cm of rain in a single month. It caused millions of Euros in damages to homes, infrastructure, and agriculture, disrupting the lives of countless residents.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: satellite\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;satellite&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A free-flying object orbiting the Earth, another planet, or the sun.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/es\/glossary\/satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Satellite<\/a> images captured the dramatic expansion of the floodwaters, which swallowed entire communities and vast swaths of farmland. Moreover, the data allow for accurately estimating the affected areas and the damage caused by the flood.<\/p>\n<p>&#xA0;<\/p>\n<h3>Exercises<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Satellite Map:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Look at the satellite image maps deselect all layers&#xA0;by unticking the respective boxes.<\/li>\n<li>Select now the satellite image from <strong>2019<\/strong>, aquired during the flood. Try to assess the width of the flooded area.<\/li>\n<li>Zoom in and try to identify areas, where roads are flooded.<\/li>\n<li>Add the false-colour infrared image from 2019 and compare. What is better visible in this representation, what less good?<\/li>\n<li>Add the satellite image from <strong>2020<\/strong> &#x2013; which changes can you identify? Are there still traces of the flood visible, e.g. in the field structures?<\/li>\n<li>Add the satellite image from <b>2023 <\/b>and zoom in. What signs of recovery can you see?<\/li>\n<li>Deselect all satellite image layers and select the <strong>2023 water layer<\/strong>&#xA0;derived from the satellite image.
