The Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant, located at the west coast of the country on an island in the Gulf of Bothnia, emerged as a significant milestone in this endeavour. Over the years, the development of Olkiluoto has brought about notable changes to the coastal landscape, all closely monitored through <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: satellite\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;satellite&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A free-flying object orbiting the Earth, another planet, or the sun.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/fr\/glossary\/satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">satellite<\/a> images.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, Olkiluoto was a sparsely populated island with a picturesque coastline. The construction of the three reactors of the nuclear plant necessitated <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: extensive\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;extensive&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Farming: Agricultural production system that uses small inputs of labour, fertilizers, and capital, and producing small output relative to the land area being farmed.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/fr\/glossary\/extensive\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">extensive<\/a> <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: land reclamation\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;land reclamation&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Process of transforming water surfaces into land or making formerly unused land surfaces accessible to use.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/fr\/glossary\/land-reclamation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">land reclamation<\/a> of approximately 150 hectares, transforming the shoreline and surrounding areas. Satellite images have captured the expansion of the plant, the construction of cooling water channels, and the growth of infrastructure. While the construction of a fourth reactor has been stopped, the Onkalo spent nuclear fuel repository is currently being constructed only 2 km east of the power plant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/Olkiluoto2014_mod.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1126\" src=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/Olkiluoto2014_mod-610x414.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/Olkiluoto2014_mod-610x414.jpg 610w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/Olkiluoto2014_mod-768x521.jpg 768w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/Olkiluoto2014_mod-221x150.jpg 221w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/Olkiluoto2014_mod-400x272.jpg 400w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/Olkiluoto2014_mod-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/Olkiluoto2014_mod.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><\/a>The Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant has become an important source of electricity. With three operational reactors, the facility has a total installed capacity of 3,380 megawatts. In 2021 a total of 14.4 TWh of the 83 TWh electric energy consumed in Finland was produced. The reliable and clean energy produced here significantly reduces the nation&#x2019;s carbon footprint and reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to a more sustainable energy mix.<\/p>\n<p>&#xA0;<\/p>\n<h3>Exercises<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Satellite Map:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>Look at the satellite image maps and switch the image from <strong>2017<\/strong> on and off. Describe the changes between <strong>2011<\/strong> and <strong>2017<\/strong>. Where are the modifications of the landscape most prominent?
