{"id":934,"date":"2023-11-08T14:32:22","date_gmt":"2023-11-08T13:32:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eovision.at\/esa-schoolatlas\/?page_id=934"},"modified":"2025-03-03T13:54:44","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T12:54:44","slug":"lake-taihu","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/it\/biosphere\/lake-taihu\/","title":{"rendered":"Lake Taihu"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Algal bloom in an intensively used lake<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/wp-content\/gismaps_maps\/bio02_1_lake-taihu\/index.html\" width=\"100%\" height=\"650\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>With the increasing intensity of <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: aquaculture\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;aquaculture&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Cultivation of aquatic organisms, i.e. breeding, raising, and harvesting fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/it\/glossary\/aquaculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">aquaculture<\/a> in East Taihu, China, the amount of nutrients in the Lake Taihu has increased. This so-called eutrophication led to an increased algal growth and a decreased water quality. As a consequence, the water supply in surrounding areas suffered. In addition, development of marshiness in the eastern littoral zones and East Taihu has occurred.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/LakeTaihu.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1155\" src=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/LakeTaihu-610x408.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/LakeTaihu-610x408.jpg 610w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/LakeTaihu-225x150.jpg 225w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/LakeTaihu-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/LakeTaihu-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/LakeTaihu.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><\/a>From 1993, the entire lake suffered eutrophication, a process in which an excess of nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates causes an algal bloom. The increased growth of algae removes oxygen and reduces the water quality, causing fish and other organisms to die. These algal blooms have become increasingly severe.<\/p>\n<p>In response to these challenges, the Chinese authorities have launched a series of projects to reduce the inflow of nutrients into the lake. While the water quality has improved significantly, algal blooms remain a issue in Lake Taihu. In addition to in-situ measurements, <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: satellite\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;satellite&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A free-flying object orbiting the Earth, another planet, or the sun.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/it\/glossary\/satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">satellite<\/a> data are a valuable tool for monitoring the state of the lake.<\/p>\n<p>&#xA0;<\/p>\n<h3>Exercises<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Satellite Map:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Look at the satellite image maps and deselect all satellite images&#xA0;by unticking the respective boxes.<\/li>\n<li>Now add the overview satellite image from <strong>2019<\/strong> to the map.<\/li>\n<li>Which <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: land cover\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;land cover&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;The characteristics of a land surface as determined by its spectral signature (the unique way in which a given type of land cover reflects and absorbs light).&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/it\/glossary\/land-cover\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">land cover<\/a> classes can you identify around the lake?<\/li>\n<li>Add the detail satellite image from <strong>2019-08-12<\/strong> and zoom in.<\/li>\n<li>Add the detail satellite image from <strong>2019-08-17<\/strong>, taken only five days after the first one.
