This makes it one of the world&rsquo;s busiest airports, highlighting Turkey&rsquo;s role as an important global travel and trade centre. The New Istanbul Airport is expected to have a profound economic influence. It is anticipated to make a substantial contribution to Turkey&rsquo;s <a class=\"glossaryLink\"  title=\"Glossary: GDP\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;GDP&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Gross Domestic Product: Monetary value of final goods and services produced in a country in a given period of time (e.g. a year), a measure of the economic power of a country.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/glossary\/gdp\/\"  target=\"_blank\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>GDP<\/a>. Additionally, it generates thousands of job opportunities directly and indirectly.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: satellite\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;satellite&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A free-flying object orbiting the Earth, another planet, or the sun.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/glossary\/satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">satellite<\/a> map shows the huge impact of the airport on the landscape. Located about 30 kilometres northwest of the city centre, the new airport has replaced forests and agricultural land on an area of almost 40 square kilometres. Additionally, the road network serving the airport was enhanced substantially.<\/p>\n<p>&#xA0;<\/p>\n<h3>Exercises<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Satellite Map:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Look at the overview satellite image from <strong>2023<\/strong> and try to identify city areas, forests, and agricultural land.<\/li>\n<li>Have a look at the special situation of Istanbul between Asia and Europe and think about its role e.g. in long-distance trade.<\/li>\n<li>Which airports can you identify at this scale? Zoom into the image and continue your search.<\/li>\n<li>Zoom out again and deselect the overview satellite image. Add the detail views from <strong>2010<\/strong>, <strong>2017<\/strong>, and <strong>2023<\/strong> one by one and describe the changes. Zoom to the airport area displayed in the detail views.<\/li>\n<li>Try to give an estimation of the area directly affected by the new airport.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss possible impacts of the airport to the local population.
