The national park covers a diverse range of ecosystems, including marshlands, pine forests, and shifting sand dunes visible in the <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: satellite\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;satellite&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;A free-flying object orbiting the Earth, another planet, or the sun.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/glossary\/satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">satellite<\/a> images.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/WetlandsinDonana.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1146\" src=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/WetlandsinDonana-610x406.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/WetlandsinDonana-610x406.jpg 610w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/WetlandsinDonana-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/WetlandsinDonana-225x150.jpg 225w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/WetlandsinDonana-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/WetlandsinDonana-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/11\/WetlandsinDonana.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><\/a>Satellite imagery show the intricate web of water bodies, including the Guadalquivir River and its tributaries, which are essential for sustaining the park&#x2019;s <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: biodiversity\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;biodiversity&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;biological diversity, variety of all living things and their interactions in an area.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/glossary\/biodiversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">biodiversity<\/a>. Do&#xF1;ana is a sanctuary for over 300 bird species, such as flamingos and the rare Spanish imperial eagle.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture has a significant impact on Do&#xF1;ana, with around 25% of its area utilized for farming. The park faces challenges from agricultural practices, which have altered its hydrology. Crops such as rice, strawberries, cotton, and sunflowers dominate the landscape. Rice fields, covering approximately 12,000 hectares, are a vital part of the local economy and ecosystem. They serve as feeding grounds for numerous bird species, especially during the winter months.<\/p>\n<p>Strawberry cultivation is another significant agricultural activity in the region, with Do&#xF1;ana being a major supplier of strawberries to European markets. This industry, however, has faced scrutiny for its water consumption and pesticide use, posing challenges to the park&#x2019;s delicate balance.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the effects of <a class=\"glossaryLink\" title=\"Glossary: climate change\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;climate change&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns due to natural or man-made effects.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/esa-schoolatlas.eu\/esa-schoolatlas\/glossary\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">climate change<\/a> are increasingly felt, with rising temperatures and more frequent droughts. Conservation efforts have intensified in recent years, with over 400,000 hectares surrounding the park designated as a buffer zone. More and more sustainable agriculture practices and strict land-use regulations are implemented to mitigate human impact.<br>\n&#xA0;<\/p>\n<h3>Exercises<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Satellite Map:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Look at the satellite image maps and click on the layer selector in the upper right. Deselect the layer &#x201C;<strong>National Park Donana<\/strong>&#x201D; and all satellite images by unticking the respective boxes.<\/li>\n<li>The Open Streetmap (<strong>OSM<\/strong>) map remains. Compare with the OSM map.<\/li>\n<li>Switch the layer &#x201C;<strong>National Park Donana<\/strong>&#x201D; on and off and compare the areas inside and outside the national park borders. What differences can you see with respect to the visible structures?<\/li>\n<li>Switch the overview satellite image on again. Switch the detail satellite image on and zoom in to the maximum reasonable scale (the image should remain sharp).
